The IBM Story

A journey that began in the 1960s

Since the 1960s, IBM has been actively developing local capabilities through alliances and business partners to build a robust ICT ecosystem.

IBM’s ‘culture of innovation’ has resulted in various technology breakthroughs. The first mainframe, the IBM System/360, was introduced on April 7, 1964. The mainframe has and would continue to power mission-critical applications of many organizations, that was the industry consensus.

Developing the ‘workforce of the future

“We’ve explored leading-edge technologies to create smarter solutions for tomorrow’s challenges, whether that’s reskilling workforces for a digital future, or preparing undergraduates for an ever-evolving job market,”

The era of hybrid cloud and AI has begun

According to IBM Malaysia, companies are rebuilding business models around digital technologies such as hybrid cloud and AI, thereby infusing greater intelligence into the core processes that underpin their business.

The culture

The workplace culture at IBM India may vary from one location to another. For instance, some insiders described the Bangalore office as more professional than in Pune.

While this might be true, most insiders are happy with the friendly culture. The appraisal system, though, is something that needs improvement. IBMers, the company’s term for its employees, tends to overlook the appraisal system due to its culture of continuous learning.

The THINK40 program is an example. It involves 40 hours of ‘self-initiated professional development per year for each IBMer

The vibe of the place

Freshers must equip themselves with the most relevant skills for the job to convince IBM India of their employability. As the top management seeks highly skilled individuals, it’s unsurprising if only a select few join the company every year

Recruitment Process

IBM uses several types of assessments after screening CVs of applicants: coding assessment, cognitive test, English test, and video assessment. Not every applicant has to complete all of these tests.

Coding assessment (approximately 6 questions)

Applicants for tech roles need to answer multiple-choice questions and/or a coding interface with a few challenging tasks. They should also complete the assessment in 30 minutes.

Cognitive test (approximately 6 questions)

This assessment determines a candidate’s decision-making and problem-solving skills by completing five interactive games. Freshers should complete the test in 30 minutes.

English test (10 questions)

Multiple-choice questions gauge the candidates’ English proficiency. This round has a time limit of 10 minutes.

Video or learning agility assessment

A series of questions from a video interview provides IBM India with an in-depth look at a fresher’s skills. The company may opt for a learning agility assessment with 50 questions, which should be answered in 30 minutes.

Once a candidate completes the assessment stage, the company will then invite them to an interview. Shortlisted candidates should expect interviews over the phone, via video, or in person.

In some cases, IBM India may choose to invite the candidates to an assessment day where they will be evaluated through group exercises. Those who move on may be interviewed on the same day.

HR and technical interview questions

  • What are the differences between C++ and Java?

  • What is an operating system?

  • How would you describe a pointer?

  • Why did you apply for this role?

  • What have you done in school?

IBM  can take as fast as two weeks to complete the hiring process.
