What's your job about?

Genpact helps businesses achieve transformations through digital-led innovation and digitally-enabled intelligent operations. As a risk consultant at Genpact, I help Genpact to achieve those objectives by working with clients to design, implement, assess and improve governance, risk and compliance frameworks. On a typical day, I would work on identifying and mapping out processes related to underlying risks and controls. However, my tasks are not limited to these and an additional variety of tasks are added/modified based on the client requirements and the project that I am assigned to.

What's your background?

I was born and brought up in Bangladesh. I was there up until Year 8, after which I moved to Australia with family and continued my studies in Canberra. After completing year 10, I went back to Bangladesh again and completed my bachelors in Electrical and electronics engineering. After completing my bachelors, I wanted to broaden my knowledge and expand my horizons, which led me to come back in Australia to continue my masters in 2019. During my master’s degree, I came across a course named “Risk management” which sparked my interest in the risk domain. I started applying for roles 6months before my graduation and that process led me to an interview at Genpact. I believe my passion for the risk domain helped me secure the job, and the Genpact YTP program made my transition from studies to work, a seamless experience.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

I personally believe any job is teachable as long as an enthusiastic mindset is present. Additionally, skills like good communication, adaptability, teamwork and strong problem-solving ability will be useful to thrive in this role. These skills are not specific to one background and can be obtained from volunteering, internships, part-time roles as well as extracurricular activities. Therefore, I am sure if someone has the appropriate mindset and is passionate about the work they are doing, they can definitely be successful in this role.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I think this is the coolest job I could work in because it is allowing me to work within my preferred area of interest, which is risk management. I am learning to apply my existing knowledge around risk, while also acquiring an understanding of new concepts and tools used in the industry. Apart from the fact that the job allows me to work on my favourite subject domain, I also find it extremely intriguing that I am helping solve different types of business problems. When there is a big team of people working on the same project, the contribution of each person counts and I feel I have been able to help in making an impact.

What are the limitations of your job?

As this is a desk job, one should consider the usual problems that a desk job might cause. For example, long hours of sitting, staring at the computer screen, posture issues can happen if appropriate precautions are not taken. However, these issues can be resolved by taking short breaks and maintaining good posture. It is always a good idea to reach out for support regarding this kind of issue. Genpact provides a wide range of support services, which has been really helpful for me during the initial stages of settling down at work.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Keep a goal for yourself and work towards it. If you are unsure of your goals, speak to a mentor to get advice and learn from their experiences.
  • We often get so involved in our goals and aspirations that we forget that we need time to relax too. Don’t compromise your physical and mental health; seek assistance and reach out to family and friends when necessary.
  • Don’t lose your sense of wonder because it keeps you grounded and lets you learn new things throughout your life. Considering the plethora of information we have available to us in the present world, it often gets hard to stay curious. Having a sense of wonder and being curious will keep you enthusiastic, make you appreciate new experiences, and help you see things from different perspectives.
